I'm getting a bit of spam via pm's. Anyway way I can report or block these users?

AFAIK, it's a security problem with the forum software we're running which allows unapproved new members to send PMs. I've talked about it with the committee and we may have a fix coming up - but rest assured they know it's an annoying problem.

Oh yeah.... this has really been annoying. Getting them all the time lately.... can't wait for a fix. :)

It's weird because I almost never get them. Alastair gets them a lot so at first I thought they were scripting to target the member list from the beginning of the alphabet. Then Dave said he gets quite a few too so I thought they might be dictionary-attacking common firstnames. But "gutterboy" and "d@n" aren't common first names (at least not where I'm from) so I dunno. Maybe they sort the list by post count and avoid the top posters cos they figure that will get the banned quicker.

Hey guys,

We are certainly aware of this problem (we're all getting it) and are working on a fix.

Thanks for your patience while we deal with this.

I already bought the Susan Boyle one, $2 was just too good a deal to pass up! I mean, c'mon... SUSAN BOYLE!

On a completely unrelated note, who in the blue f*ck is Susan Boyle?

I'm not so worried about the spam, i'm more concerned that somehow, with the wealth of information available on the web regarding my buying and browsing habits, someone has profiled me as someone who'd be interested in alicia keys and lady gaga.

Though I suppose it's not like i've never googled for lady gaga. Google needs a flag you can set on the box so people don't misunderstand and target me with the wrong stuff.

So you've never seen Susan Boyle? Lucky man.

Oh yes, I forgot why read this thread. 12 new spam messages in the last 2 weeks.

Version 3.6.4 is a out of date. Is there a cost involved with updating to a newer version?

Yes there is, this has been paid and an upgrade is currently being planned and if everything works out well we should have a new version in place by next Monday.

We will keep everyone updated.

Hi Mate

For now just go to http://forums.port80.asn.au/profile.php?do=editoptions and change your PM options to disable PM's, surely that is better than deleting your account?

Cheers

As people seem to be having so much trouble as result of PM spam, I have disabled Private Messaging on the forums until the issue is resolved.

Disabling PMs for all users based on a vocal few is not the correct way to go about it.

FWIW I haven't noticed this issue.

How come I don't get the spam? I must admit I'm feeling a bit left out.

You are missing out, on lady gaga albums for $1.97

I'd forward you the offer but I can't get to any of my PMs.

I personally agree, and like many others, haven't found it to be that much of a problem, but it is the only way to stop the problem until the forum upgrade is completed.

Hmmm I wondered why I couldn't PM someone... especially when the forum rules specifically state that you should PM someone rather than reply publicly...

btw I haven't received one single piece of PM spam.

Hi nebbian,

I apologise for the inconvenience caused there, we do encourage getting in contact directly with people via email as well.

Unfortunately, the Port80 forums have become a particularly popular target for spammers lately and as such, we've had to take the rather radical step of turning off PM's for now.

Thanks for your understanding.

Seriously kids, for those that haven't gotten them, you're missing out on at least 4-5 crappy-tune-download promos a day. Wickedawesome.

Go admins! Rah, rah, rah! Fight those spammers! Or at least get them to offer decent music! Rah, rah, rah!

Perhaps you could put a system in place where you can only PM someone after you have made, say, 5 posts?

This would stop most spam bots who create an account and PM anyone they can find, without posting anything on the forum.

cadmium

The PM spam is the result of a bug that allows unregistered users to send private messages, that is why we can't do anything until the forum software is patched.
