View Full Version : best wordpress plugins for member-only pages
Does anyone have any recommendations for WordPress plugins they've used before, for restricting certain pages to only registered users?
There's so many, I'm hoping someone has been through this pain already!
There is a built in option - 'visibility' at top right of the edit page layout.

Yeah but then I either have to manually set the password for each page - which means one password for everyone, plus changing it is a manual process - or else "private" pages are invisible to people not logged in and I want them to be challenged for the password instead...
The framework for private pages is there, but it needs plugins to make it useful. I just dunno which one is the best :)
There is rumour of allowance for this in the core in wp3.0... I looking around 2.6 and gave up... So I too would be interested if anyone else has a members only area solution

A little over a year ago, I waded through everything that I could find that was available. For the most part, it was all poo.
So, I just built another template in the theme that's basically a copy of the main one, with an "if is logged in" at the top. That's the only way I could solve what I was looking for.
Good luck tho, if you find a plugin that's worthy, let us know.

That might have to be January's nomination for the Port 80 Uber Hax of the Year award.

I second that... I messed around a bit then tried Judd's suggestion and whammo. Solution haxored :)

I was looking for the next level of control, user group specific area control on multiple pages, as well as a member login area. Still looking.

Was hoping for a user admin controlled solution.

I found a Role Manager plugin and have combined that with custom-defined roles that I've used in the "Member's Only" template.
Other than that, I wish there was something like this as the very first CMS I ever helped build has this functionality. Silly buggers.

To be fair it was never designed to be a CMS...
I used the page-template-hack-ala-Jexley with the sidebar-login plugin to give me a login box wherever I wanted it, and it's a good solution, all up - does everything I want it to :)

Everytime someone uses WordPress inappropriately, a fairy gets brutally murdered, and her body parts mailed to her grieving family.

It can't help being fucking brilliant.

Has anybody played around with a plugin called User Access Manager?
I found it while working on a site for InSilico. It sounds to me like this would be the plugin to use.
It allows you to create user 'groups' and places a panel on the page/post editing screen with checkboxes of each group you wish for the page to be viewable. Anyone not in that group gets kicked to certain page which I think you can specify. Powerful for what we needed it to do
I recommend trying it: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/user-access-manager/

This one looks like what I was looking for 2 years ago and I've downloaded and will play with soon. I'll be certain to hack the shit out of it soon as it looks to be a very early version of itself and is no doubt in need of my touch.
And by "touch" I mean "I'll make it work for one site and break for everybody else".
