Hi

I'm sorry it doesn't look like you've got any responses yet.

It may be worth considering setting up a survey (survey monkey or similar) with a few more specific questions and ask people to respond anonymously.

Ditto - its the not being anonymous bit that is making people hold back.

I am pretty much anonymous on here so i will answer openly and honestly

1. Business is going better than expected, but not as strong as i would like. The demand for sites is high at the moment - but it is not my prefered work. Mainly i am being requested to do a myriad of backend development on appallingly ugly and grossly miscoded sites, but my skills are stronger in front end design.

The budget i am working to is $4500 - $7000 weekly, i usually have 1 client active and 1 lined up - so i am always hoping once i start a project another client comes knocking. Since i only kicked off in January, this is extremely satisfying, as all new clients are word of mouth exclusively.

2. I am region hopping like mad, my clients are geographically diverse (Vic, NSW, USA, Canada, Argentina, UK) but primarily in the same industry - it is the network of the industry that is fueling the clients interest. I can tell you i started with a single client purely by chance in the Murray-Darling district, i was riding a bus on my way back from a holiday and fell into a very opportune conversation.

Since i was in your shoes not very long ago - doing the business plan, research etc - i can tell you that i was way off base with the reality - i thought there was a clear opportunity to be had in my region, set myself up in a nice store front and made myself visible to the locals - at the moment i could be working out of the back of a van with a laptop situated at McDonalds using the WIFI and my clients wouldn't care as long as i keep them informed and up to date.

With all that said, i am not doing work i enjoy, i woud currently work for free on front end just to be able to stuff the portolio with relevent work that is visually marketable for the future. In actuality i am not going to work for free for anyone, anywhere, anyhow - but i am getting desperate to do something i enjoy, and something my Mum can embrace - at the end of the day, your Mum is the only relevent arbiter of success or failure.

Thanks for the reply alvin. Here I am trying to make sure that I don't make a large mistake and all I need to do is ride a bus(lol) and take my laptop to McDonalds. But you forgot the mobile(customer service).
