There's enough jQuery scripts that enables image galleries out there, but most of the ones I've found churns out horrible HTML and even worse CSS.

Has anyone come across a lean slim semantic standards friendly gallery? I don't really have the time/budget to write something from scratch myself.

I'm not looking for a lightbox solution, but a in-page auto + previous/next variant.

http://www.twospy.com/galleriffic/ has the functionality, but I don't like all the nested divs and absolute positioning.

Cheers.

the gallery you linked to could be hacked a little.

For example, you could make all these empty divs with js instead of having them in the html.

<div id="controls"></div>
<div id="loading"></div>
<div id="slideshow"></div>
<div id="caption"></div>

then.. you could throw out the caption div if that's annoying you, and either put the content in the <li>, or even stuff it in a title or a data attribute.

<img src="path/to/thumbnail" alt="a dog jumping in a lake" data-caption="wet dog: rover shows his diving skillz" />

then your markup's pretty clean and semantic, no?

Look into http://malsup.com/jquery/cycle/
This site is poor in that, you get the impression it can only do image transitions; but dig deeper to the "even more demos" page http://malsup.com/jquery/cycle/more.html?v2.23 and there's a lot more you can do.
This demo sounds like what you're looking for http://malsup.com/jquery/cycle/pager.html or with thumbs http://malsup.com/jquery/cycle/pager3.html
