Im wondering lots of things about the industry of web design in general.........and my situation in general

Im new to australia and I havent worked for an employer before as i was freelance for several years in europe beforehand. I thought that working for someone else would be rewarding as I could focus on design and let someone else take care of the business side of things for a while.

I have a web design job (joomla, flash, etc) where i am paid 25 dollars an hour on a temporary casual basis. i do not have a contract which outlines overtime and terms of employment.

Is this legal?.
Is it normal?.

I have heard and have been looking at a lot of adverts that 50 000 dollars is actually a reasonable salary for a web designer and i talked with a recruitment consultant......... she said to expect between 50-60 thousand.

correct?

thanks.........

I'm gonna break an unwritten rule and talk about pricing upfront.

I was just asked to quote on a project for a government department. More specifically, by part of the department that runs several community programs.

They already have a website. As does each of the programs.

What they want is a 1 page site that provides a brief description of each program (5 programs max), and links to each respective program website. Pretty basic stuff.

I suggested they do some research into the phrases their stakeholders use to search for these programs online, and use this to guide their choice of domain name and preparation of content. I also gave them some examples from Google's keyword search tool - to get them started.

I also told them they would be up for hosting and domain registration.

For my bit, in summary, I estimated the following scope and costs:

Kick start meeting - 2 hours
Design (including one round of revisions - any more incur extra) - 8 hours
Development - 4 hours (1 straightforward static page, probably with some basic JQuery to hide/show longer descriptions of each program)

My hourly rate is calculated to absorb time spent emailing and phone calling about a project. This generally works OK. Some clients are hassle free, some hell.

So total 14 hours. At my hourly rate that comes to just short of 1K

Not sure if I got the job or not, but initial feedback suggested that my price was perceived as low.

What would you charge for something like this? Does quote provided depend on assumed financial worth of client, or time taken to do job multiplied by hourly rate?

Typically I use:
where labels are fixed width and shit gets floated to put it next to each other. maybe even throw some columns in.
