Default Voxson Site Review

Hello guys / gals,

I'm fairly new to these forums so I might just start off by getting some reviews of a site that I am currently working on.

It's the largest site I've done so far and I just want any ideas that might help me improve the look, navigation and content of the site. A lot of things (like the shiny logo) are specific requests from my supervisor (who knows very little about design / web / anything) which I can't change. So yeah just anything that stands out or doesn't, let me know.

I would really like to improve the SEO of the site to get better rating also if anyone has any suggestions.

Cheers!

Voxson

Hi Kad

First off, be aware using link text as you have done may look a bit like pork in a can. And people may be less likely to respond. (Thanks admin for getting rid of the yucky taste in my mouth.)

To be honest, there's just a bit too much going on. I'm not sure where to look. There's that sparkly thing happening on the logo, the animation and blinking text.

Be aware that blinking text and animations can cause problems for people with epilepsy (and people like me who get irritated easily). If you MUST have it, at least set it to loop once or twice and then make it stop!

As a visitor to your website I just don't know where I'm supposed to click or what you want me to do. The page links are small (you may want to increase the size of those and the clickable area) and there's no clear call to action.

The content is minimal and what IS there is about you. It is not about me and what you can do for me. I like websites to be about me. How did you decide what to write?

There are also better (imho) ways to lay out a website than using tables. All the cool kids have moved on (quite some time ago) to css for styling and presentation.

Have you done any keyword research or planning to improve your SEO?

A really quick fix to help get people to click on your link in the search engine results: write a good description. Your meta descriptions are blank and this is your opportunity to show off ON google's page. Use it! If there's no meta description google will just use a snippet from your site.

How's that for a start?

P.S. Contributing to a community is a great way to get people to click on your links. Tha spam stuff just makes people want to ignore you.

Thanks Rachel,

Yeah I wasn't aware that link text was a bad move. As for the shiny / flashy stuff, I have tried over and over again to insist on not having them their but its the clients wish.

As for the meta discription, I do have one in there (which is "Australian for over 40 years and bring the best price in LCD TVs, Hi-Fi, Home Theatre and much more.") Is there a better way of doing this?

I don't understand what you mean by "call to action". Its a reference site for when people are going to buy a particular product and want to find out more about it. How I decided what to write was researching other consumer electronic sites / brands and using the same language / terms / discourse.

I've been looking into backlinking and other alternatives of SEO but due to my work conditions, I haven't been able to spend a lot of time planning it. I really need to increase my knowledge in this area (slowly but surely).

Thanks again!

Hi Kad

I apologise, I missed your meta description. (hint: it is a good idea to have different descriptions for each page - they're about different things, right?) You also need to think about word order (particularly key word order) and grammar.

When you researched other sites did you analyse what worked well/what didn't work well/what was missing on their site? It can be really useful to do user testing on a competitor site to determine how (or how not to) set out your own site.

I'm not really sure whether Voxson are a manufacturer, importer or retailer. If I googled "tv" and your website came up, I'm not sure I'd know what to do next. Should I click on online order? products? or one of the flashy bits down the bottom?

A call to action is where your site gets me to DO something. Do you want me to ring and speak to a salesperson? Do you want me to buy a tv online?

It is useful to have that in mind when you're designing a site.

Are you responsible for design, development and content? It is a big ask and there is a lot to know about each of those areas. I suggest some time hanging around here. There are some awesome designers, devs, ux people, seo experts etc you can learn from
