it's been around for awhile - probably as old as ssl html itself, don't think it's a hack though. I came across it while working on namecheap.com circa 07 and thought it was dang cool and always wondered why it's not more widely used...

It seems to me that there are techniques that people use, which seem obvious when pointed out, but otherwise remain almost completely anonymous.
