Looking forward to meeting all you WA'ers.
I'd like to suggest meeting at the Sutherland corner George and Harris or maybe further down Ultimo way. I'll give that some more thought. |

OK, so venue choices.
We can either go; 1. Kirk on Harris (where all the Perth Port80 people are staying) 2. Sutherland (As Brad pointed out, above) 3. Pumphouse Bar (not far from WD07 venue) 4. Pyrmont Bridge Hotel 5. Point Hotel 6. The Quarrymans Hotel ...what say you Sydney people? You know the area better than me! |

Haven't checked opening hours on any of these yet but here's a quick summary from a recently-moved-here local who hasn't got around to many of the local pubs yet.
1. Kirk on Harris (where all the Perth Port80 people are staying) Convenience doesn't get much better than downstairs for you guys. Usually seems to be plenty of room in the main bar and also the weirdly empty sister bar Dunkirk right next door. I believe there are also $10 meal specials. 2. Sutherland (As Brad pointed out, above) Haven't been, but might be a bit of a walk from Port80 Field HQ at the Kirk. 3. Pumphouse Bar (not far from WD07 venue) Looks kinda swanky but always seems empty (which I guess means Port80 can bring the party). I believe drinks are on the expensive side. 4. Pyrmont Bridge Hotel Usually pretty busy (it's open 24/7) but is a little... well... I'm told it's nicknamed "The Skank" by locals. 5. Point Hotel Bit further up Harris Street from the Field HQ (and away from the Ultimo end of Harris). Haven't been there but hear the food is good. It's a pretty swanky renovation of an 1850s hotel. Bonus points for being even closer to my place. 6. The Quarrymans Hotel Right over the road from the Kirk so it's a pleasant stumble home for Port80ers (with the added excitement of pavementworks which may still be underway in September). Food upstairs isn't too bad. There's also: 7. Harlequin Inn (Union Square, Pyrmont) A block from Field HQ, but a pleasant downhill incline for the walk home. They do get bonus points form this former-Perth-resident for having Little Creatures on tap. Also have cheap thai food which is apparently pretty good. All of that said, the only pubs I've been in are the Quarryman's and the PBH (shudder). |

Si suggested I chime in, however while I also live near the Kirk I haven't pubbed in the area much either! (coffee and food is another matter)
1. Kirk on Harris - convenience plus for everyone staying there. haven't been in there though. 2. Sutherland - very long walk, i'd suggest it's too far from the kirk actually. catch a bus or cab it. buses do run along harris street though. 3. Pumphouse Bar - good place but does sometimes get used for odd club nights, best to check ahead of time. one time we went there and a pop-rnb club broke out, it was surreal. otherwise a nice place with a really great range of beers. 4. Pyrmont Bridge Hotel - it's always open... and um, it's always open. it's a bit of an institution, probably because no matter what venue just had last drinks and chucked you out; you can always keep going at the PBH. that said, i've only been there one time for a lunch. not that i ate since they forgot my order... 5. Point Hotel - have heard this is good but haven't been there. 6. The Quarrymans Hotel - have only done upstairs pub lunch, but that's always been good and not too expensive. Other options... 7. The Cohi Bar (upstairs)/The Watershed (downstairs), Darling Harbour (near conference venue) Cohi Bar is a cocktail and cigar bar; not notably cheap but the cocktails are good and every sixth one is free The staff have always been really nice to us when we've been there.Watershed is an inoffensive bar and weeknights you will always be able to find some drinking space. Very common NDM watering hole, mostly due to proximity. 8. Over the Pyrmont Bridge and into the city you'll find Redoak (http://www.redoak.com.au/), a swanky boutique beer place. Boutique prices, but the beers are really good. 9. King Street Wharf, you'll find the James Squire Brewhouse (http://www.jamessquirebrewhouse.net/home_sydney.htm), where you can get steaks as big as your head and eight James Squire ales on tap, four of which you usually can't buy bottled as far as I know. Plus other beers etc of course. A bit pricey like everything at Darling Harbour but you sure won't go hungry (well, ok, I haven't checked for vegetarian options). Hope that helps ![]() Last edited by tuna : 21-08-2007 at 08:50 PM. Reason: fix link |
