Default Chat Script

Hi All

I have a client that desperately needs a really good script to host chats.

Client is a provider of remote learning and needs a robust platform to host "chatting or facilitating or training"

Requirements:

Ability to have approx 15 rooms. Each managed by a moderator/facilitator/teacher

Need to be able to whisper to room mod/teacher

If it stores history in MYSQL land cool but not a 100% requirement

Probably best if PHP capable of running on a Unix box

Important - needs to support older browsers/slower connections so whiz bang web 3.5.0 ajax schmickness might not cut it..

Loadwise get about 150-200 concurrent users max for 2-4hrs per day.

Any help or hints will be rewarded with a BIG THANK YOU

Cheers

A

Well, I did some digging, haven't actually tried these, but they look rather promising. the first one is PHP/AJAX, the second one is flash based. They both mandle multiple chatrooms, private messaging, room moderators etc, and they are both rather cheap.

PHP/AJAX one: http://prochatrooms.com/

Flash based one: http://www.v3chat.com/chatroom.php

Take a look, hope you find what you need

I'm sure this doesn't meet your requirements at all But you could look at using Campfire http://campfirenow.com/ if it doesn't need to fully integrate into their existing site.

Thanks Zen, neither does the job well.

Grant/Stuart thanks guys looked at campfire last night (via @xfitzyx) - i don't mind a hosted solution - but it simply does too much. I really want simple product that can handle chats and that is all

not trying to be an arse, but are you sure you were looking at campfire?

there are other 37signals products that include campfire, but campfire alone doesn't really do much other than chat.

http://campfirenow.com

sorry for stating the obvious, but their product offering is pretty confusing with campfire/basecamp/backpack/whatever

lol no you are not being an arse - better to leave assumption out!

I did look at the campfirenow - it does voice, files (file storage) aside from chat - a bit like google wave except that you have more control. I just want to authenticate, fire up a window, choose a room (teacher) and talk to others in the room as well as the teacher. Really want to KIS if possible.

maybe building a custom flash/java solution is your best bet then.

flash communications server makes it really easy to build custom apps that do this. I did a tutorial that had a multi-room multi-user chat session up in minutes (but that was years ago). But that's not free or open source
