Are they important or irrelevant?
What is the best way to use them if they do still hold SEO value?

Useful for giving hints about where the link might go. Especially in a web app. Not sure if any search engines index them do they?

The way I tackle anything is: if you're looking to for the SEO value in anything, make sure you give at least the same consideration for your users. If it's good for the Googs and good for the Gander, then rock on. Otherwise, don't fuss with it if you've got better things to do (and I bet you do).

Irrelevant is a harsh description for an attribute that aids end users, but since you're refering to the SEO side of it, you're off the hook!
Circa 2005, it had no impact because it wasn't used often enough to give weight to it in the algo. That's awhile ago too ![]() But I wouldn't discount it from ever being used in the algo, especially now that usability/accessibility is in the spot light.

Thanks Franki. I was focussed purely on the SEO benefits but seeing that it has accessibility benefits, the SEO is either non existent or a nice benefit.

How would you go about establishing if the title attribute had SEO benefits or not? Just curious.

Matt, make a test page and put a unique phrase in the title attribute, then Google it.

To see if I can find it by the attribute. Good idea.

From an SEO perspective, irrelevant, at least for now.

but google doesn't "use" websites or buy products or get lost in the navigation.
